These Seiffener Volkskunst Guard nutcrackers have artificial fleece for their hair and beards. At one point in time, a few East German manufacturers substituted this material for the rabbit fur they usually used. In this case, I have yet to see any vintage examples of this model that didn't use this synthetic material.

These two 11 1/2-inch Guards were purchased together. One was missing an eye. They were both missing paint in places. One had loose arm joints.

Being the smaller versions, they don't have the round brass decoration on the front of their helmets, like the 15 1/2-inch version has. Their mustaches are also just painted on. The mustache on the larger Seiffener Volkskunst nutcrackers is a thick applied material, painted dark brown.

The large version of this model is still being produced by the company and currently uses rabbit fur or a convincing facsimile for its hair and beard. It's otherwise unchanged.
