This 13 3/4-inch Seiffener Volkskunst Soldier nutcracker had been manufactured at the time when artificial fleece was substituted for the rabbit fur used for its hair and beard. This material seems to attract grime. It was so filthy that I opted to replace it with rabbit fur instead of trying to clean it.

The main issue with this example was paint loss in multiple places. Where paint was missing on its face in several places, green stained wood was visible. My best guess is, this was an experiment with the thinner used to clean brushes. It might have been used as a primer. It would have been a creative use of a waste material. Clearly, if the objective was to make the top coat adhere better, it didn't work.

So far, the matched replacement paint is staying put.
