This 11-inch Seiffener Volkskunst Hussar nutcracker was missing its eyes and paint in a few places.

This nutcracker was made during the time when some workshops were substituting artificial fleece for rabbit fur hair and beards.

The fleece on this example felt sticky and smelled strongly of a certain inhaled herbal substance. Some things just won't be revealed in even the best auction pictures.

I replaced the fleece with rabbit fur which helped with the smell. In time, it went completely away.
